The breed was nearing extinction by the early 80's and recovery efforts began in 1982 to save and protect the breed. Dr. Amadeu Francesch and Dr. Antonio Jord?began working to standardize the breed after they had developed over 300 hens and rooster to match, bringing the breed back from near extinction.
The breed which has been developed into 4 colors ( Black, Crele, Partridge, and Wheaten) has now been distributed from Catalonia Spain To Holland , Germany, U.K., Ireland and USA in order to ensure its survival. Efforts are still ongoing here, as this breed is still considered very very rare in the USA.
